[edit] Me!

I'm 27, a computer science major at the University of Utah, an unapologetic left-wing nutjob, and something of a Linux geek. I am neither NP-hard nor Turing-complete, and I could easily be replaced by a twelve line shell script. I'm also doing some web work for Hawkwatch International (thanks for hosting us, Pete).

My political philosophy is simple: openness and transparency are the keys to a good government and a healthy society. The primary role of government should be to create that openness. Environmental regulations force the free market to come to grips with the costs that companies could otherwise force onto others. Occupational, health, and labor regulations keep companies from treating their employees like machines who can be replaced when they break, and from forcing others take up the burdens of that brokenness. Public education exists to take on the task of preparing every child for their futures, a task which benefits everyone, but at a cost that no individual organization would be willing to pay.

Right now, we have a government run by people who are ideologically welded to the idea that government should be "drowned in the bathtub", and whose goal is to remove the protections currently enjoyed by workers, consumers, the environment, and our democracy as a whole. I for one do not welcome our neo-con lazzies-faire overlords, and I hope this is a place where I can pitch in.
